seeing as my daytime schedule consists mainly of going to the gym and catching lunch with family and friends, i thought i'd disrupt routine with the film festival happening for the next two weeks. the film selection is huge and i heard from my sister that there is a movie documenting dust. well. actually with such graphic content i'm intrigued and wonder how the dust might settle in the end. a ha. ha. (really you're too kind.)

and so i went today with my sis to take in a french flick, subtitled of course for her and hopefully an enriching language experience for the both of us. now as much as i enjoy watching french films, i am always weary about the one inappropriate scene that always manages to sneak itself in there, no matter what the french movie. and so i thought, why not 'la France.'

The French countryside in the autumn of 1917. The Great War rages on, Camille, lives for the letters her husband sends to her; one day, she receives a short note, telling her he will never write again and that she should forget about him. Camille, instead, heads off to find him, disguising herself as a man and heading for the front. Walking through the woods, she latches onto a wayward platoon, and with her never-say-die attitude, becomes an indispensable cog in the war machine. But how long will it be until they realize her true identity? (viff.org)

Can't get a more french movie than one in the countryside, i remember one i saw in france about a man who lived on a farm who was looking for a wife since his died and he needed someone to look after the domestic duties while he farmed. but i digress. 'la france' was... interesting. never mind the countryside, the tragedy of war going on and the fact that the platoon was one that deserted their mission, it was the almost spontaneous song that would burst from these soldiers and make us think:  'WHAT THE BLEEP.' seriously my sis could barely stop herself from bursting out in laughter it was so odd. not artsy odd, but rather 'that's france' odd. not that french people spontaneously burst into song but man... 1917 soldiers on the run, with instruments. picture the platoon freezing from the winter cold and exhausted from walking, they fall to the ground. then one sits up and starts strumming a lively tune on his makeshift guitar made from a big can and stick, then the entire group (or rather those still alive to sing another day) sings in parts and harmony. i think i've made my point.

and there was 'that scene' at the end btw. who's up for another french matinee?

freedom 25

I was asked recently by a friend how i occupy my time now that i'm retired. something akin to "seriously, what do you do, everyone's busy with stuff right?" well. as the title suggests, i have lapsed from school into the toil of work and finally into the golden years. or rather month. I might as well repeat and emphasize that september has been marvelous, feels like summer vacation in high school without the pressure to gain any experience in order to put something other than hobbies on a blank resume.

indeed 'freedom 25' may irk some readers seeing as retirement at such an age seems outright ridiculous. i agree, alas the fault is entirely mine and i'm painfully aware of it. yes i'm currently 24 but '25' had a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that was absent with the true age. deal with it people. i do, everyday.

and so continue my days of shopping, time with family, leisure reading, going out, msn/facebook, meeting up with friends, eating... *contented sigh* the schedule can fill up surprisingly quickly, can you imagine if i had to work?!

seriously now, i'm planning on going to china for a bit in 2008. to teach, to travel, to get away from the rainy months of vancouver, only to return in the sunny summer months and enjoy the retired life once again. til next time, v

wow. it's been so long i almost got kicked off after too many wrong passwords. heh

i've finally finished the B.Ed. program and am now a content and retired peach. nothing like an inconsiderate unfeeling busybody to kick a crack into my contentedness, but yes i am a teacher now and no i don't feel like teaching yet. understanding others is key in this lifetime, so i'd appreciate not reading this off someone else's blog that i'm lazing about. you bloggers know who you are.

so what have i been up to with all my time off? catching up with friends and forgetting about the worries of life. enjoying time with my family and remembering what it was like before school. feeling the season of fall slowly descend upon us without the thrill of school and without that desperate sinking feeling that comes with reading the course syllabus and realizing that the fun that was had during the summer is all but a fleeting memory. yes retired life is nice. freedom 25. then again i'm 2 months early. haha

the '40 days of community' campaign has started and even as i admit i don't hold high expectations i do believe this can result in nothing but good for our church. skepticism comes from the millions that the initiator has made since, but i am hardly qualified to be cynical towards he whom God has blessed.

spending time with sis has been much fun. even tho we both are busy retirees, or rather behind the scene socialites, quality time is wonderful. you didn't read it from here, but here is a snippet of conversation from today's excursions:

-hahaha all my japanese i know is from all you can eat menus. tonkatsudon, sushi, edamame, gomae...
-onigiri! what about your russian? borstch? russian beet broth right?
-borstch... and 'sausage'.
-uhh sausage is english
-oh.

now that i'm a qualified teacher, i look forward to one day teaching. or so is the plan. no rush tho, no rush. now about being a graduate of yet another degree, thoughts turn towards graduate financing. in cars more specifically. no plans in the making to buy another car, but with my B.A., we finally scrapped the 88 and got a new one. went to the dealership with my diploma (which the uni ceremoniously handed me in a cheap paper folder, but a semi grand paper folder it was). to my surprise and dismay the guy told me that it wasn't good enough! "anyone can photoshop a university diploma nowadays" he says. EXCUSE ME!? 5 years of classes, midterms, papers, final exams, coop terms, all the time and effort and transportation... all for this piece of paper that ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH!? WHAT!?

ahem. well. funny how things work. their answer is bring a transcript. but perhaps i should have spend my time and money on mastering Photoshop instead

en classe

i can't help but question the accuracy of the 'footprints' function of xanga. either my stalker's found my page or my friends are worrying that i've found the means of teleportation in my disappearances during the weekdays. please tell me it's the latter or that my counter's messed.

sitting in class watching a presentation, all the while wondering how i'm going to present when it's my turn, as well as trying to temper down the panic of having yet another presentation and project due for tomorrow morning. at this point no matter how applicable the project, once it's done i highly doubt that i'll ever have the inclination to return to such a pain-associated project. i have no idea how so much time and emphasis can be alloted to a 15 min presentation worth 5% of the course. 5%, that's not worth prepping over when tomorrow's assignment is a 5min presentation worth 15%. granted that one's also tied in with a project which unfortunately is not ... um, completed... yes i started it. ...at 1am this morning... sigh*

incoherency will be the theme of today's post, cynics would say of this blog. but other than practicing my skills of inattention while trying to maintain my image of sweet yet sleepy student,  there was* a story to tell. if i can focus long enough on either activity -xanga or class. xanga it is.

so this morning i went to bed at 3am, which is quite late for me, considering i like to sleep and with a 1.5hour-ish commute to my 10:30am class, even limiting myself to 30 mins from wake to run, 5.5 hours of sleep doesn't cut it. well. i woke up this morning after countless hits to the snooze button, only to discover that it had* been countless as i got up disoriented to the fact that it was 9:35am and no it wasn't some ill timed april fool's joke (i'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere). i was out of the house by 9:45, in time to see the late bus driving away... far far away. upon arrival to the skytrain station, again i saw that mode of transportation pulling away from the station above while i stood at the intersection waiting for the lights to turn. no worries tho, i got to class a mere half hour late (heh), just in time to catch the 'beginning' of class after course/prof evaluations. *phew*

another 40 mins for the remaining 5 people to present, myself included. if it turns horribly you might just hear about it. ?tout ?l'heure.

yes it's crunch time and yes i'm on xanga. wow the things i do for the little people. hahahahaha. [crickets] wait! i was kidding, don't leave! well. there go the last readers of my flailing readership. since it is* doomsweek, i'm afraid i have no choice but to cut and paste from another means of procrastination: msn. now don't worry, it's nothing scandalous like being locked out under dressed, hey that'd be quite the story wouldn't it, but i'd hardly be the one to be under-dressed. but before i do so, i suppose i should reward those who have stuck with me in reading this incoherency with something other than someone else's embarrassing experience.

speaking of rather mortifying moments, dignity and composure went flying as i did likewise down the front stairs of the church last sunday. as i slid off my heeled sandals onto my butt, losing the offending shoe as i less than gracefully went down, my outfit consiting of skirt hardly helped matters. i did manage to temper the urge to re-enact the JLo 'you saved my shoe' moment, which remains my point of pride in the matter. ahem. i did have a moment of reflection, of how i seem to be reminded of the dangers of gripless but fabulous shoes every time i sit down. oww... yes God works in miraculous ways.

and so i leave you to reading an msn conversation as i take this moment to panic in the realization that i've lost another half hour left to get down to work tonight. ciao!
